House Propping in Auckland: What Builders Need to Know

Whether you're removing a load-bearing wall, pouring a suspended slab or repairing foundations, temporary propping keeps the structure safe while the permanent work goes in. Get it wrong and the risk isn't just delays. It's structural damage and people getting hurt. Here's what Auckland builders and homeowners should know before booking propping for their next job.

When does a house need propping?

Propping (also called falsework or back-propping) is temporary support that carries loads while part of a building can't. Common situations include:

  • Removing or replacing load-bearing walls during renovations

  • Installing new beams, lintels or openings

  • Pouring concrete slabs, decks and suspended floors

  • Re-piling, foundation repairs and underpinning

  • Supporting structures during recladding or remedial work

If you're unsure whether your job needs propping, your engineer or designer will usually specify it in the plans.

Why engineered propping matters

Every building carries loads differently, so propping should be designed for the job rather than guessed on site. At Tana NZ, our design team works with yours to engineer the propping best suited to your project, and every system is supplied with calculations you can review against your construction methods.

We use a high-grade steel ringlock system with specialised bracing and ledger spacings, combined with superslims and LVL timber bearers. That lets us achieve very high leg loads while keeping the system tidy and quick to install.

What to ask your propping supplier

  • Will you provide calculations? You should get written calculations that match your plans.

  • Who designs it? In-house design means faster turnaround and fewer hand-offs.

  • How is it inspected? Every system should be inspected and tagged before work starts.

  • Are your crews certified? Look for Site Safe Gold Card crews and recognised prequalification such as SiteWise.

  • Can you handle the logistics? Tight Auckland sites often need careful delivery planning.
